Ichos
and Maqam are parallel notions underlying the codification of modal
phenomena in Greek Orthodox Chant and Ottoman Court Music. A number
of music theoretical treatises from the 18th century onwards deal
with extensive comparisons of Ichoi and Maqamlar. This talk will
focus on the complementary aspects of the music theoretical systems
of those two traditions. Furthermore it will point out the relevance
of notions and practices in these traditions for contemporary developments
in music and related arts, with view to combinations of traditional
and avant-garde forms of expression within the context of experimental
arts.
