The Maqam concept in Arabic Writings   I will argue that the way the maqam is considered in contemporary literature not always corresponds the views one finds in the abundant Arabic sources. My purpose is to briefly examine the question in light of what is found in some of the major Arabic sources included in my two RISM volumes entitled The Theory of Music in Arabic Writings, I also intend to try to find out when exactly the very term (not the concept) maqam appears.   Who is Amnon Shiloah?
