The
world of Arab Music in the last decades has been shaped by the transition
from artistic music to generally commercial use of music. The dimensions
of this development shall be demonstrated following the example
of Egypt with the help of analysis and pieces of music, performed
by Tahia Shams el-Din. The lecture also intends to point out the
danger that nowadays threatens the tradition of artistic music.
